Today's demands on power substations are greater than ever before, challenging operators to ensure reliable, non-stop power supply with reduced maintenance and installation costs. In this context, the networking facilities in electric power substations are being redesigned to accommodate the desires of communities, where the high performance communication network should guarantee very strict requirements and comply with the IEC61850-3 and IEEE1613 power standards to prevent the

possible power disturbances and outages. Besides, used in power utilities, the networking equipments are subjected to extremes of temperature and humidity, as well as electrical transients from high voltage switching.

Korenix introduces managed gigabit Ethernet switches for providing highly reliable network communication and real-time monitoring in critical power substation applications. The IEC 61850-3 and IEEE1613 power substation-rated JetNet 6528Gf modular managed gigabit Ethernet switches with 3 modular slots provide several types of fast Ethernet modules with high fiber/copper optic and gigabit port densities to deliver maximum flexibility and simple interface exchangeability for various network connection needs while reducing the overall connectivity costs. In addition to the fan-less design, ESD and surge protection, the JetNet 6528Gf  supports various power input types, including 90~264VAC, 88~370VDC and 24/48VDC for flexible use in severe conditions of field power constructions.

In the remote sites the JetNet 5612G is used, which collect the data from the cameras and intelligent electronic devices (IED), and transfer them to the control center through formed gigabit rings. In long-distance areas, the switches use SFP transceivers to further extend the data transmission through fiber connectivity. The high-quality traffic switching without data loss and blocking is guaranteed by the 24G backplane of switches with the integrated non-blocking switching function.


 
JetNet 5612G Industrial Gigabit Managed Ethernet Switch

The reliability of the data underground has been achieved using the MSR ring redundancy technology of the switches – the JetNet 5210G series with the support of MSR were capable of forming rings together. If any link failed, the network could be recovered instantly, within 5ms, without causing any data loss.
Another important factor for the Coal Mining Company to choose JetNet 5210G for the underground installation, has been its robust design: the switches with Level 3 EMC conformance for heavy industry deployments as well as the EN 50121-4 Railway EMC, IEC 61373 vibration/shock approvals are constructed in rugged IP31 enclosures, and have a wide operating temperature range -40~75°C. This means that they could reliably be used under tough conditions without any instability.

The JetNet 6528Gf series fanless rackmount switches were further used in the control room on the ground to ensure reliable backbone connection with the JetNet 5210G switches for collecting the data from underground area. By using the modular design, users could benefit from various copper or fiber connections and get data from a great number of devices installed in a control room. Using SFP combo ports for 100Mbps fiber connection, they collected all the real-time data to send it to the PC through high-speed gigabit combo ports for analyzing the situation under mines.

Besides, as it supports LLDP and Korenix NMS, users could directly get the topology of the network and monitor the devices, change the IPs etc, the group management etc from the control room. Using Korenix switches the company allowed system integrators to prepare highly reliable data transmission from the underground mine to the control center without any data loss and collision and thus providing safe mine operation.
