SCADA system in Power Utility

Overview

Traditionally, SCADA systems have played an important role by providing utilities with valuable information while delivering power in a reliable and safe manner. An enhanced, high quality SCADA solution is essential to ensure effective operation of utility's most critical and costly assets. Today’s challenges and demands for SCADA system developers are greater than ever before, including technological advancements, reliability, as well as lower costs towards interactive, self healing smart grid of future.

Over 150 JetBox 9300 industrial embedded computers have been used as a base of a data acquisition system from main substation plant assets. By integrating rich interface of LAN, DIO, serial ports into compact boxes, the computers were easily stored in small spaces for performing multiple data connectivity, such as data collection from various networking equipment, PLCs, signal and digital controlling devices, saving physical media costs. All the data was stored on the SD card and sent to the system through the Ethernet ports.

To easily and efficiently manage the network, the supported Modbus2SNMP function was used. The JetBox 9300 computer worked as a Modbus to SNMP gateway, allowing engineers to check and modify the process in local sites through Modbus protocol, while IT staff in central sites (control rooms) benefitted from SNMP to get device data and do network management. The ultra reliable RISC processor provided stability and reliability required for real-time utility control.

To develop programmable front-end controller applications, the JetBox 9300 also provided Linux SDK. With Korenix Auto-Run customization setting on SD card, users were capable to configure their own Linux commands and automatically run specific applications making the network management easier and more flexible.

Using their ruggedized fan-less design, -25~70°C wide operating temperature, the JetBox 9300 series provided stable, reliable and efficient communication under the most severe environmental conditions becoming a perfectly fitted data gateway system for the power substation SCADA systems.
