Korenix JetCon 2301-mw multi-mode Media converters have recently won a project in China to provide an enhanced PIS system inside subways for an innovative experience of its metro passengers. With the supported low forwarding latency the converters will ensure uninterrupted data transfer, while EN 50121-4 Railway EMC compliant ruggedized design with -40~75oC operating temperature will guarantee the highest stability and reliability of the media converters when installed on the subway tracksides.

Along with the fast development of China's railway networks, Passenger Information System (PIS) is becoming widely used in subway systems for bringing added value and convenience to passengers. The main challenge for installed equipment in network infrastructure is to transfer data fast and in real-time while resisting to harsh conditions, such as constant electromagnetic interference or shock that is so common in railway systems.

A Subway operator in China has chosen to use Korenix JetCon 2301-m Fast Ethernet to copper media converters for building high-speed wireless PIS system to improve extended data communication between moving metro carriages and the control room.
The PIS system will provide real-time information to passengers such as weather report, subway's arrival-departure time, train schedules, administration announcements, advertisement and emergency evacuation alert messages. The system will include mobile wireless APs installed in the carriages of each train, and fixed WiFi APs installed in tunnels and connected to JetCon 2301-m multi-mode media converter to extend the data up to 2KM through Fiber cable from carriages to the control room.

Because the fixed WiFi APs support fast roaming technology to enhance long range wireless coverage in order to satisfy the high speed of moving trains, the data forwarding latency must be very small. Korenix JetCon 2301 series have been chosen for their low forwarding latency design with 1.6 x 10-6 seconds to ensure data transfer with no delay and interruption. Besides, the converters have passed the EN 50121-4 Railway EMC standard with excellent testing results and provide high level of electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS), as a result they will guarantee that they are capable to resist the immunity caused by moving of the train and can be great solutions for installation in the railway trackside.
The JetCon 2301 which supports several data forwarding technologies – converter, store and forwarding, cut-through and modify cut-through modes, may further provide customers with more options of device configuration based on their transmission speed and size for achieving efficient and highest performance data transfer. With redundant wide power input range 10~60VDC and the -40~75oC operating temperature the converters will perform stable operation ensuring the uninterrupted PIS of subway system.
